# Areacast > Areacast is a Mac app for sharing only part of your screen in video calls. You put a yellow frame around what you want to show, and Areacast turns that area into a separate screen called "Areacast" that you can pick in any meeting app's share menu. It can also record that area as a movie. Everything outside the frame stays private. Meeting apps see it as a normal display named "Areacast". - Works with every app that can share a screen, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Slack, Webex and Discord. No plugins or extensions are needed. - You can move and resize the frame while presenting; the call follows right away without sharing again. - The frame snaps to halves, thirds and quarters of the screen. Holding Command drags freely. - Works across multiple displays: drag the frame onto another display and the share follows. It avoids a MacBook's camera notch. - Can show your webcam inside the shared area, as a rectangle, rounded square or circle. - Records exactly what is shared to a movie (H.264 .mov), with the microphone and/or the Mac's sound, using the record button on the frame. Movies are saved on the Mac, in the Movies folder or a chosen folder. - The webcam's background can be blurred, or removed (transparent) so only the person shows on top of the shared content. This runs on the Mac itself. - A setting chooses whether notification banners that appear inside the frame are shared. - The yellow frame and its buttons are never part of the share. - Remembers your frame, display and webcam between launches. - Updates itself: it checks areacast.app for new versions (after asking) and installs them when the user agrees. ## Pricing - Free: every feature, no time limit. The share shows a small "Shared with Areacast" badge in its bottom-left corner, which the presenter also sees inside their frame. It can be hidden 3 times for free, each time until Areacast quits. - Lifetime license: $14.99, paid once, sold through Gumroad. It removes the badge for good. The key is entered in Settings → License. ## Requirements - macOS 14.6 Sonoma or later. - Apple silicon and Intel Macs; one universal download. - Screen Recording permission. Camera permission only when the webcam is turned on, and Microphone permission only when recording with the microphone. ## Privacy Areacast only records when the user presses record, and saves the movie on the Mac; it never uploads anything. Otherwise the picture only leaves the Mac through the meeting app the user shares it in. The app only goes online once when a license key is entered, to check the key with Gumroad, and, if the user allows it, to check areacast.app for updates. ## Why it isn't in the Mac App Store To offer the framed area as a screen, Areacast creates a virtual display, which uses a macOS feature that isn't available to App Store apps. It's distributed directly from the website instead. ## Common questions - How do I share only part of my screen on a Mac? Open Areacast, drag the yellow frame over what you want to show, then share the screen called "Areacast" in your meeting app. - How is it different from sharing one window? Window sharing shows a single app and freezes or goes blank when you switch apps. Areacast shares an area, so you can show several windows side by side and switch apps freely. - Is Areacast free? Yes, with every feature. The free version shows a small badge in the share; a $14.99 one-time license removes it. - What do the other people in the call see? Only what's inside the frame, at full sharpness, plus the mouse pointer while it's inside the frame.
